10:54p - My cousin's wedding
My whole Saturday was spent on the job in my first big project behind the video camera: recording my cousin's wedding on Saturday. It was a whole day affair, starting in the morning with the tea ceremony, going into the wedding ceremony in the afternoon, and stretching into the wee hours of the night at the dinner.

I stayed over at David's place on Friday night so that I wouldn't have to get to his house early in the morning. I woke up at 6:30am and got ready for the rest of the day. We left for Melody's house at about 8:15am. There was the bargaining for the bride, which took nearly half an hour (the tests: singing a song, counting how many days since they first met, sewing buttons onto a brand new shirt, declaring his love from the ground floor without any words, and listing 10 things that his bride expects from him), then the tea ceremony for her relatives. After that, we returned to his house for the tea ceremony for his relatives.

The church ceremony at Wesley Methodist Church was scheduled for 2pm, but as luck would have it, the driver missed the turn, ha. But the bride got to the church in one piece and everything proceeded without a hitch. There was the wedding reception, but it had to be wrapped up quickly because there was another wedding at 4pm. We (I and a few helpers) proceeded to Hotel Intercontinental to prepare for the dinner. I got a shower at David's brother's room and watched a bit of TV.

Guests started to arrive at 7pm and we mingled for about an hour. Dinner was supposed to start at 7:30pm, but as is the case with Chinese wedding dinners, one plans for lateness, so dinner was really meant to begin at 8pm. In the middle of the courses, there were speeches by my uncle, then David himself. He even sang a Chinese song for her. There were also two slideshows, one of the professionally taken photos, the other of their baby and other assorted pictures. The dinner ended at about 11pm, but I didn't leave till 12am when he and the bride finally retired to their room.

On Sunday, my parents let me sleep in and I had the chance to let my limbs recover from the day before. But even today, my legs still ache. I had mentioned during the wedding dinner that I could get a good workout from recording wedding videos.

Of course, my thoughts over the last few days drifted to what my own wedding would be like. My biggest concern: the wedding dinner. Given the high cost of these dinners, I'd prefer to keep it small. Then there's the problem of seating people so that everyone is happy. There's also the issue about food since I'd like to include some non-Chinese food. But after filming the wedding dinner, I know that there is one thing that I definitely do not want: the cheesy serving of the first course, with the flashing lights, music and the waitstaff moving about like fairies. Geez, that's just too hokey.
